It is mainly used for SATA drives connected to a IDE port on motherboard ide slot through a cable
It is a small cute box which has small light emitting diodes mounted on it.
There is one glowlight which shows power
Other one shows data flow as blinking
There is one green light which shows up as on when a hard disk gets ready to show that it is in a state where it can be detected in windows system.
One can detect that hard disk through device manager like we scan for hardware changes.
Like Magic it shows up the drive with partitions.
Now Data can be scanned, bad sectors seen, smart diagnosed,disk cloned or imaged or data recovered.
If the light doesnt lit it indicates the hard drive has a firmware or media issue.
There is another set of two lights, which glow only if the pcb has no issues AND IF THE PCB or motor has issues only one light will glow.
